Working it Out: Approaches to Digital and Remote Performance Making

18 February 2021

FRINGE LAB is here to bolster your artistic toolkit -  let’s talk about creating radical new forms!

We want to talk about the remote, and making the digital sphere work for your idea, so we’ve teamed up with Malaprop Theatre’s resident tech-wizard John Gunning to provide a space for creative conversations, practical problem-solving and guidance from an internet expert! Do you have a piece of work you want to present remotely or an idea that you're desperate to create but aren’t sure how it will meet audiences? John Gunning is here to discuss process, to advise on your technical queries and to ask you the questions you haven’t thought of yet.

This support will take place in two ways, through both an open forum conversation about approaches to digital and remote art-making and through a series of one-on-one conversations with artists planning to make remote shows.

Conversation

Elevenses, 11am on Friday 26 Feb via zoom.

John and our Artistic team will be hosting this month’s Elevenses - we’re ready to have the chats about your questions on digital and remote art-making! This is an opportunity for us to skill-share, identify common pitfalls and just talk it out. This is an informal environment to talk about ideas for projects, how they can meet audiences remotely, what platforms/ media you’re considering and any burning questions you might have! We’re also happy to talk through any of your general application queries ahead of applications closing on 10th March.

Elevenses is a digital coffee morning, so bring the tea and biccies and get ready to dig in! New faces and repeat attenders welcome! You can join us on Zoom by following this link (passcode: 059047).

One-on-ones

Tues 3 March & Wed 4 March

John will be offering one-on-ones to talk through your project, at any stage of development. He's here to ask useful questions, talk through particular concerns or creative struggles, and lend an outside eye. Spanning technical advice, creative conversation and insightful provocations, the fantastic John Gunning will brainstorm with you as you consider a step into the digital! If you are interested in signing up for a one-on-one, we also ask that you attend Friday’s Elevenses.

Sign up for our one-on-ones here by 2pm on Fri 26 Feb. Places are strictly limited and we’ll inform selected participants shortly after the closing date. Once confirmed we'll ask you to answer a few short questions about your project ahead of the meeting.

John is an alumni of Dublin Youth Theatre and The Lir where he learned how to make things up from nothing and then how to do it safely. As a lighting designer and a technician he has toured work to Australian opera houses and West Kerry parish halls. Since theatres closed John has run live streamed script readings, hosted front of house on Zoom and gotten really into complicated ways of presenting on Instagram Live.
